This long time family-owned home burned down to the decorative block walls, leaving a scene of total devastation. Before talking with High Caliber, our client Cathy had the situation surveyed by several other local builders; their assessment– bulldoze the remains and start over.
The block walls that remained, however, were decorative and distinctive, having only been made in Crozet (Albemarle County) in the early 1900’s. High Caliber Construction arranged for the careful demolition of the debris, leaving just the first floor shell and most of the main level floor joists. We then brought in an engineer to assess the wall damage and to design a shoring up of the walls, which included removal of the top row of block followed by the installation of a special block to accommodate several continuous runs of steel rebar encased in concrete.
From there, High Caliber’s talented crews rebuilt the interior and exterior to much of the original, which included milling the trim on-site and custom making the stair newel posts which incorporated some special-order period decorative detail. The rebuild also added a new rear shed dormer, matching the original front dormer, to provide for a completely modern second floor Bath with period design. Special 3/4″ red oak floors, Pella Windows, real hardwood exterior doors and a metal roof rounded out the rebirth.
